Tunnels constructed using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), face a big challenge due to the lack of reliable and validated techniques for geological-geotechnical recognition during excavation. This limitation hampers the ability to anticipate and optimize the excavation parameters for efficient construction. The platform geoRISCO addresses this problem by incorporating geotechnical monitoring data as an alternative and additional real-time source of information to anticipate the interpretation of the reaction and geomechanical behavior of the ground. geoRISCO utilizes advanced automated analysis with machine learning to combine data from geotechnical instrumentation during the pre-excavation phase (since the tunnel face is at a distance equivalent to 2 times the diameter of the excavation section) with excavation parameters from the TBM. geoRISCO represents a novel approach to tunnel construction, providing a robust solution to the current limitations in geological-geotechnical recognition. It allows for a more accurate prediction of ground behavior, leading to better-informed decisions regarding excavation processes, thereby minimizing geological risks and reducing downtime and preventing costly delays. ACCIONA co-finances the development of geoRISCO through its I’MNOVATION 2024 program in the challenge “New technologies for geological prediction in TBM”, of which geprode was the winning startup. For validation, ACCIONA provides geoRISCO with Line 6 of the São Paulo Subway, the largest infrastructure project in Latin America with 15 km of tunnel and 15 stations, which is currently under construction. The Line 6 project presents an ideal environment to validate geoRISCO’s capabilities, as it encompasses diverse geological conditions that require precise and adaptive management strategies. The outcomes from this project will provide valuable insights and set new benchmarks for future tunnel construction endeavors worldwide. Overall, geoRISCO holds the potential to revolutionize the tunneling industry by enhancing the accuracy, efficiency, and safety during excavation, thereby addressing one of the most pressing challenges in modern civil engineering.
